Reminder that 15 years ago today was the day that the final Oldsmobile rolled off the line, a cherry red Alero.

As much as I liked the Alero, it was a bit of an insult to the brand that their final car was a rebodied Grand Am, complete with the old GM plastic interior to forever haunt the brand.

It gets worse when you look further back... if you look at their final concepts, they saw the future right before they were killed off.

2000 Oldsmobile Profile

Move over, Buick Encore and Envision. You wouldn’t have stood a chance Profile and Recon, the two would’ve sold like hotcakes today in the CUV craze. They would’ve had the full CUV lineup that GM needs right now well before Buick and Chevrolet did.

Oldsmobile was truly GM’s cutting-edge. Engineers and Designers saw the trend, bean- counters killed them.

Wait, The Profile? That looks a lot like the Tesla Model X, but WAY better in key areas. Front clip is amazing, the arched greenhouse is less frumpy, and it has sliding doors, not overly complex Mr. Falcon doors.

Olds died, but if GM had chosen to keep it, rebadging them with Holden/Opel vehicles like they did with a few others, it probably would have worked out. But at that point, they were drawing straws.

I have no idea why they chose Saturn to live (for a few more years). Once they gave up on the plastic body panels, that brand was no more. And that’s sad.

My parents had a silhouette, which they bought new, terrible car, but it was the car I was most in when I was learning how to drive.

I never really cared for Olds mobile, but those concepts are very cool.

Aleros and I ntrigues are both horrible cars that make me glad that Oldsmobile died.

The Aurora was cool tho.

That Profile concept really is slick. That could slap a bow tie on it and sell it today with little to no changes. If it had a RWD chassis and a turbo 4, or V8 I’d buy it

It wouldn’t fit in with today’s overly complicated designs but I think that would be to it’s advantage.

Our family had a Ciera SL with the 3300 when we first landed in Canada . It was practically a loaded International minus the International badging and console shifter.

I spent most of my childhood in that until it was replaced with a Lumina.

I had both gens of Aurora. They were shitty and unreliable, but very cool.

And we’re talking about a car that was designed almost 20 years ago.

Well one was a rebodied Grand Am and the other was a rebodied Lumina, so they were victims of typical Old GM.

At least the Intrigue and Aurora got their own engines.

IIRC Penske was trying to buy Saturn from GM at some point.
